Ostapenko`s house

The two-storey mansion was built in 1906. The owner of the house was an Honorary citizen of Chernihiv Hryhorii Kuzmich Ostapenko. He was quite an extraordinary (even in those anxious times) person. The Colonel, a participant in the Russian-Japanese War (he participated in the defense of the Port Arthur). It is also said that Hryhorii Ostapenko was an adjutant in one of the Admirals of the Pacific Squadron. Upon resignation the naval officer settled in Chernihiv but could not forget the sea. It was from his nostalgia that an unusual house was born.
This building is commonly called a ship-house. Nowadays there is a regional association "Enlightenment" on the ground floor and the gallery "Steep stairs" is located on the second floor. The gallery was named after the successful realization of the dreams of Hryhorii Ostapenko who built his house closely resembling a warship. On the balcony, there were handrails with metal doors through which guests were invited to enter. The naval captain stepped out onto the deck, opened the door and threw down a real storm ladder. To descend from the second to the first floor, it was necessary to go through a narrow spiral staircase, like the one on a real ship.
