On January 10th, 1893, as a result of the establishment of a local office of “Empress Maria Aleksandrovna’s Guardianship of the blind” a school for blind children opened its doors in Chernihiv. The school was located on the corner of Vozdvyzhenska (today’s Kniazia Chornoho street) and Sviatoslavska (today’s Myru avenue) streets in a manor over a hectare large.
On January 12th, 1897, the consecration of a chapel founded in honor of the Holy Mother Queen of Alexandria of Rome was performed. Fortunately, this building has survived to the present day.
It is noteworthy that the former chapel has preserved some of its original flooring, namely the Mettlach ceramic tiles manufactured in Kharkiv by baron Eduard Bergenheim’s “Refractory Bricks & Pottery Production Society”.
