It was built in 1705 - 1710 in the Ukrainian Baroque style to honor the victory of the Cossacks over the Turkish troops during the second Azov march. St. Catherine Church is a monument devoted to courage, heroism, valour and glory of Chernihiv warriors. St. Catherine Church resides Dubno-Chernihiv icon of the God Mother. The icon is surrounded by a special reverence because it is the myrrh streaming icon that healed many diseases.

Not only the icon in the church has healing powers, but also the relics of the holy rector of the temple known as St. Mercury. When his grave was dug, all the eyewitnesses could smell the roses aroma. Nowadays many people are praying to the Holy Abbot to be healed from incurable diseases.

The main feature of the interior is the opening space of the upper part of the church. Due to the fact that there are no choirs and horizontal lines on the facades of the church structure, it looks amazing. The interior is created with the help of the new domes and vaults design as they were inherent in timber constructions. In the post-war period, archaeologists unearthed plinth and other fragments of the ancient times near the church. These findings gave some reasons to believe that the church was built on the site where the temple of the Kyiv Rus was located. Some researchers think it could be a Catholic church.

After all, in the decoration of the church some elements of the Western Europe gothic cathedrals can be seen. For example, you can find colored stained-glass windows inside St. Catherine church. According to the assumptions and thoughts about the history of the church, it can be argued that the building was erected by the representatives of the Catholic adherents who ran from persecutions in the Czech Republic.
