St. Alexander Roman Catholic Church was built in 1857 by the Catholic community of Chernihiv. At its core, the church was a classical basilica. Two naves under a sloping roof adjoined the central nave on two sides. The main entrance to the church was on the south side, facing Voskresensk Street. Adjacent to the southern facade was a portico with a colonnade. The southern facade had three tiers decorated in a classical style.
After the establishment of Soviet power and the beginning of the anti-religious campaign, St. Alexander Roman Catholic Church was closed. In 1935 the church building was rebuilt, destroying the naves. Since 1936, NKVD (security forces) workers have lived here. In 1941 the church building burned down, but in the 1940s it was rebuilt.
Today the building housed the funds of the State Archives of Chernihiv Region.
