Krasnyi Bridge is a concrete bridge across the Strizhen River in Chernihiv. This bridge was built by residents of Chernihiv across the river Strizhen at the end of XVIII century. At that time it was made of wood and was called due to its beauty - Red. Only 100 years later, in 1914, outdated wooden structures were replaced with concrete. In 1964, the first trolleybuses had appeared in Chernihiv and the bridge had to be rebuilt and since then this bridge looks like exactly as the citizens were used to see it in the XXth century.
It is better to visit Red Bridge when it is dark outside, because under the bridge there are red lights, which illuminate it. As a result of such illumination the mysterious atmosphere is in the air. It is the time when visitors can listen to one old legend about the city.
It is said that during the days of Hetman Ivan Mazepa, a vampire lived in Chernihiv, who scared the whole neighborhood. Immediately after the death of a famous Count Vasyl Dunin-Barkovsky, people started to disappear in the city; many were found dead with signs of anemia. After the count's death, many residents saw him riding his horse-drawn carriage across the city crossing Red Bridge. According to legend the locals went to Archbishop John Maximovich.
The Archbishop stepped onto Red Bridge to meet the carriage blocking its path with a cross. Some people say the bridge immediately collapsed and the carriage disappeared into the river. Others, however, recount that the entire retinue of the count turned into a gray cloud. In general, if you want to know much more about Chernihiv Dracula you certainly need to pay a visit to Red Bridge.
