Opanas Markevych`s grave
Opanas Markevych, famous Ukrainian ethnographer and researcher, husband of Ukrainian writer Marko Vovchok. Over the years, Opanas Markevych has collected a huge collection of Ukrainian songs, legends, recipes of folk cuisine. In addition, he was a composer and wrote music for the opera "Natalka Poltavka". He died in 1867 in Chernihiv; he was buried on Boldyni Hills.
On the morning of September 1, 1867, 45-year-old Opanas Vasyliovych Markevych died of tuberculosis at the Chernihiv Hospital. The magazine "Kyiv Antiquity" wrote: "A noble and talented man, a sower of good, beauty and science, passed away." Opanas Markevych himself was poor, so his friends and family (then the famous Chernihiv governor and Prince Golitsyn) buried him on Boldyni Hill near the Elijah`s Caves, not far from St. Elijah`s Church.
