Taras Shevchenko Chernihiv Regional Ukrainian Musical and Drama Theater
The history of the foundation of the theater begins in 1926. Then in Yelisavetgrad, now the city is called Kropyvnytskyi, a mobile working-peasant theater named after Taras Shevchenko was created. A famous actor and director Leonid Predslavich headed the theater.
In 1933 the troupe in full composition was sent to Chernihiv where in 1934 the theater became a stationary one and was named Chernihiv Regional Ukrainian Musical and Drama Theater named after Taras Shevchenko. In 2001 it received its academic status for the 75th anniversary of the theater and for its outstanding creative achievements. Now the theater continues its activities. The stage regularly presents comedies, dramas and tragedies of Ukrainian and world classics, premieres, and it tours other cities and appears abroad.
The building for the Chernihiv Drama Theater was opened in 1959. It is made in a classical style and resembles an ancient Greek temple. The facade of the theater is decorated in the form of a portico with eight columns. The pediment is decorated with a bas-relief composition in the center of which is kobzar Taras Shevchenko, and on both sides there are heroes of his works. The three-storey theater is located between Krasna Square and Bohdan Khmelnytskyi Garden Square. The ensemble of the central part of Chernihiv was completed with theatre construction.
