Taras Shevchenko Monument in Chernihiv is the monument to the great Kobzar, outstanding Ukrainian poet and philosopher Taras Shevchenko.
The son of the Ukrainian people, the ingenious master of the artistic word was on a visit to Chernihiv more than once. First, Taras Shevchenko visited Chernihiv in 1843 and later he stayed with his friend, artist Andrii Lyzohub several more times.
The uniqueness of the monument is in the choice of the original artistic concept and its sophisticated implementation. It is as if by accident Taras Hryhorovych settled down comfortably to have a rest on a park bench and got deep in thought looking into the distance. Shevchenko holds the folder with pictures in his left hand. There is also a carelessly thrown cloak next to him.
Volodymyr Chepelyk, the sculptor of the monument, National Artist of Ukraine, managed to convey in bronze famous Shevchenko's muse and his subtle charisma. The monument pedestal is made of granite while the figure of the poet is made of bronze. The height of the whole monument is 4 meters. The sculptural composition is mounted on a massive rectangular pedestal and is supplemented by a black plaque autographed by the great Kobzar.
By the way, this is the first monument in Ukraine where Taras Shevchenko is portrayed as a young man in his early thirties, full of energy and creative plans.
The monument was erected on Val (the Rampart) in Chernihiv in 1992.
