The story of this private estate began in 1903 when this plot was purchased by Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi who planned to build a house here. However, the writer suffered from health problems, which were getting worse, so eventually he sold this land to a remarkable economist Yosyp Havrylovych Drozdov.
In 1908 Drozdov built a wooden house in Modern style, lavishly decorated with cut-through wooden ornaments, for which our city was well-known far beyond its limits. Later on he planted pine trees which still rise above the house today. Each of them is more than a hundred years old. It’s also worth saying that the estate area was considerably larger initially, but over the years parts of it were cut off for neighboring houses.
Nowadays, Yosyp Drozdov’s house is renovated and functions as a rehabilitation center for people with disabilities. It is today’s tenant, a non-profit organization called ‘Integration’, which the house owes its recent renovation and perfect maintenance to. In the 90s and early 2000s the situation was drastically different, though. Back then the building was occupied by a municipal housing management office and quickly went ruining after the office had moved out. Without use and heating the state of the building turned critical very fast. It is then when property developers set their sights on it.
Miraculously, the building survived being demolished and ‘Integration’ managed to move in. Its members managed to almost entirely renovate the house. Installation of a heating system with twenty-seven radiators was the first step forward. Like in the olden days, the walls were coated with clay, plaster reliefs on the ceiling were restored, and the house’s rotten floor was completely replaced with a new one. Replacing windows was another great achievement. The building was equipped with a bathroom and a shower adapted for people on wheelchairs and acquired a gym and a massage room.
This house on 40A Stanislavskoho street returned to life due to enormous efforts of its new tenants and their relatives. Today, it is one of the most interesting wooden architecture landmarks of the city.
