"Pumpkin in Chernihiv"
Chernihiv Val (Rampart) is a popular place for walks of city residents and tourists. Once here was the citadel of the Chernihiv fortress - the prince's Dytynets. At the end of the XIX century all the fortifications of the fortress were demolished, and a park was established in their place. Today, along the Chernihiv Val (Rampart), you can see 12 cast-iron cannons, which not only adorn this place, but also they are one of the main attractions of the city. Their exact origin is unknown.
According to one legend, they were standing on the bastions of the Chernihiv fortress, and another legend says that Peter I gave the cannons to the city for the courage of the Chernihiv Cossacks in the war with the Swedes. It is said that the canons were originally bronze, but over time the bronze was replaced by cast iron. However, one of the most popular legends tells that once these cannons served as a kind of "pumpkin in Chernihiv". Local girls, if they did not want to go on a date, scheduled a meeting for the gentlemen "near the 13th cannon." The unfortunates came at the appointed time and searched for the non-existent 13th cannon for a long time.
