There is a legend that the gate is made of a silver pagan idol, which was found deep underground during the construction of the current Chernihiv College. The weight of the idol was about 50 kilograms.
Boris and Hlib Cathedral is one of the oldest churches in Ukraine. It was built as a tomb of princes of the Davidovich family in the period from 1120 to 1123. During the long existence of the cathedra, it was destroyed and rebuilt more than once. Each time its architectural appearance took on new forms, until in the 1950s it was returned to its original form. Today Boris and Hlib Church is a museum of the National Architectural and Historical Reserve "Ancient Chernihiv". One of its main exhibits is a silver royal gate with gilding.

By the order of Hetman Mazepa the masterpiece of jewelry art (Silver Royal Gates) about 2.5 meters in hight was created by the master from Augsburg Germany. Nowadays, the gate is still in good condition.
