In November 1723, the acting hetman Pavlo Polubotko was arrested and sent to the Peter and Paul Fortress. According to legend, before his arrest, he secretly deposited 200 thousand gold coins at interest in the bank of England. In the devise Polubotko noted that the treasure can be taken by his ancestor and only when Ukraine will be independent. Attempts to return gold to Ukraine have been made more than once, but treasures have been not found

Interestingly, the Polubotko family crypt was accidentally found in Chernihiv during excavations near the Assumption Cathedral of the Yeletski Monastery. Four wooden coffins were found in a spacious stone room at a depth of one meter. On the one of the lids lay silver cross, the engraving on the surface of which indicated that there was the ashes of Leontiy Polubotko - the father of Hetman Pavlo Polubotko. Another object associated with the name of the hetman is the Church of St. Michael and Fedir, as well as the building of the former seminary. Both of these buildings stand on the site of the Hetman's palace. It is rumored that desperate guys once managed to get to its dilapidated dungeons, inside they accidentally saw niches where human skeletons lay behind bars. Also near Chernihiv in the village of Lyubych you can see the townhouse of Polubotko. Today a museum has been opened there.
